Part Worn Tyres

What is a part worn tyre?
A part worn tyre is defined as a tyre that has been used previously and removed from another vehicle. This tyre may have been punctured that someone else has deem unsafe to repair, or been removed from a vehicle written off in an accident, or replaced due to signs of the ageing of the tyre or simply that someone wanted different tyres. The fact is with a part worn tyre there is no history or integrity that can be associated with it.

Why do people buy part worn tyres?
Due to the current economic climate people are generally looking around for a better deal. The essential attraction to part worn tyres for many motorists is of course the price. Part worn tyres can range from £10.00 upwards.

Is it illegal to sell part worn tyres?
No it is not illegal to sell part worn tyres. Though it is a criminal offence to supply (which includes offering, agreeing, exposing or possessing for supply) a part-worn tyre which does not meet the legal requirements.

What makes a part worn tyre illegal to supply?
There are many issues that make a part worn tyre illegal to sell, the main issues are: ¢ any cuts bigger than 25mm or 10% of the section width of the tyre - measured on the outside and deep enough to reach the ply or cord ¢ any internal lump, bulge or tear caused by separation or partial separation of the structure ¢ any of the ply or cord exposed internally or externally ¢ the tyre not having the words "PART-WORN" bear in capital letters at least 4 millimeters in height ¢ the tyre having had a repair not properly carried out - to the standard required by BS AU 159e: 1990.

What are the dangers of using part worn tyres?
The danger associated with part worn tyres is that they are vulnerable. They suffer casing failure at wrong moment which can lead to accidents that may result in loss of life. Another danger is that a puncture may have occurred in the tyre and it might not have been fixed to the correct standard.
